The Relationship between Husbands and Wives during the Tokugawa period was very domineering. This Secondary Source will help historians investigate the relationship between husbands and wives in that time period. I will talk about some of the points that we can highlight from this source that will tell us how the relationship is between the two people. When we look at this image we can point out lots of points that can show us the relationship between the two people. The facial expressions, actions and the positioning of them. The facial expressions on the man looks quite scary and furious. It looks like he is taking that anger out on the women. When we compare the two facial expressions from the two people the lady looks frightened of the man like he might do something to her. In my introduction I said that in this time the relationship was quite domineering. This can lead to opinions like the man overpowering the women. This image makes me feel like that is what the man is trying to do. In my opinion he could be forcing her to do things that she wouldn't want to do and that is when the males become angry at their wives this causes disruptive behaviour between the couple. In this image the actions look quite forced from the man. It looks like he could be hurting her. This would definitely help the historians investigate the relationship in that time. In this image the positioning of the couple makes it look like that he is overpowering the women. This makes it quite clear as he is higher than her. We can compare this to the pyramid when the men are more powerful in the Hierarchy then the women are. Marriage during this time wasn't romantic attraction. They would use marriage to increase their social standings. The women were treated as slaves by their husbands no mater what the husbands social standing was. While the husbands were out working the women would stay home and do the everyday work at home. Their jobs and responsibilities were being slaves for their husbands, becoming entertainers, be a mother or wife and being a house maid for families. The women were treated all the same no mater what who their husbands were or worked for. The image will help historians investigate the relationship in the Tokugawa period.
