The Shogunate is a type of Government in Japan that gave all power to the shogun. The Shogun is the military head of Japan but is actually the political ruler of the country. The Tokugawa shogunate was very much like any dominate government. It was responsible for the administration of a limited territory. The shogun was even more powerful then the emperor who was a religious political leader.When the shogunate government in Japan becomes weak the Shogun takes over the Government. The Tokugawa Government delt with imperial court, imperial nobility and the emperor himself. The emperor was the head of the country but had no power that was when the shogun steps in with all of his power. The Shogun would also be in control of law, justice, courts, passing taxes and receiving money. This is very different to how our government works and the emperor (queen). The Shoguns essentially ruled Japan from 1185 to 1868. Japan was originally ruled by families that has power through soldiers, called Samurai. Although the ruler of Japan was an emperor, these families had the real power. In 1185, one of the Samurai soldiers defeated the emperor of the time and eventually became the leader of Japan the Shogun. The Emperor and the shogun were the highest ranking nobles. life in Tokugawa Japan was peaceful but heavily controlled by the shogun government.
